ELWELL English: habitation name
from a place apparently so called from OE hael omen +
well(a) spring, stream; the reference is presumably to
pagan river worship. This is the origin of a place name in
Dorset. Two minor places are probably `elder-tree spring', from
ellern elder tree + well(a).
The ELWELL Coat of Arms is officially documented in "Burke's General Armory" as follows:
"ERM. ON A CHEV. ENGR. BETW. THREE EAGLES WITH TWO NECKS
DISPL. GU. DUCALLY GORGED OR. AS MANY ANNULETS OF THE
LAST."
Which translates as:
"ERMINE , ON A RED ENGRAILED CHEVRON BETWEEN THREE RED EAGLES
WITH TWO NECKS, CROWNED AROUND THE NECK GOLD, THREE GOLD
RINGS.,"
